Do you remember playing the game King (or Queen) of the Mountain as a child? If so, you’re probably familiar with the task of wrestling with others who are all fighting for that one position – the top of the hill. In business, we are told over and over again, “Find your niche.” Most entrepreneurs and business professionals are familiar with that advice. The problem many businesses have, however, is staying in that niche. Some businesses get wrapped up in the mentality that if something brings money into the business, it is a good business move. Wrong! It’s tempting to step out of our niche and pursue other methods for revenue, but the result is often that our position in the niche becomes weak or lost entirely. Businesses can and do succeed with crossing niches, but it must be done extremely carefully.

As an example, Sugoi Innovations does consulting for businesses. There are all sorts of consultants, but we fill a specific niche. Sugoi Innovations focuses specifically on business ideas and innovation. We leave the HR stuff and the logistics advice up to consultants in those niches. The other day, we were approached by an individual that requested consulting in a certain field of his business. Although we are skilled in that particular area, it is not our niche and we kindly refused the offer. But it could have been extra revenue, and revenue is good, right? Yes, it is, but when you decide to leave your niche and step off the mountain, you lose control and someone else can come in to take your place.

Just like baseball, you have to keep your eye on the ball. Don’t worry about what the other team is doing in the dugout. Keep your eye on what’s thrown at you and hit hard!
